The old version of this comparison was easy: Claude for writing, ChatGPT for features. That answer is now too lazy to be useful.

Both products can search the web, remember context across conversations, work with files, speak with you, connect to business tools, and run increasingly agentic workflows. OpenAI launched the GPT-5.6 family across ChatGPT, Codex, and the API in July 2026. Anthropic’s current Claude plans include Claude Code, Cowork, Design, projects, research, memory, voice, and connectors.

The durable question is not “Which model is smarter?” It is: which product helps you move from messy input to a finished, checked, shareable result with less friction?

The practical verdict by outcome

1. Breadth: ChatGPT is the stronger single-subscription default

At $20 per month, ChatGPT Plus currently bundles broader model access with voice conversations, image generation, file uploads and analysis, deep research where available, and custom GPTs. GPT-5.6 also spans ChatGPT, Codex, and the newer end-to-end Work experience.

That breadth matters when your day jumps from competitor research to a spreadsheet, a mockup, a voice brainstorm, and a working prototype. You lose less time moving context between specialist tools.

This does not mean every ChatGPT mode is best in class. It means the subscription has more ways to finish mixed-media work without leaving the ecosystem.

2. Focus: Claude remains an excellent home for deep text and code work

Claude Pro is $20 month to month or $17 per month when billed annually. The plan includes Claude Code, Cowork, Design, Science, unlimited projects, research, additional models, and Microsoft 365 access. Anthropic also lists a 200K context window for consumer plans.

The advantage is less about a magical writing score and more about product shape. Projects make it natural to keep a body of source material, instructions, and related conversations together. Artifacts separate the thing you are building from the discussion around it. Claude Code brings that collaboration into a repository.

For a long article, enablement system, policy pack, or codebase, that focus can feel calmer than a product designed to be many tools at once.

3. Coding: do not choose from a leaderboard

OpenAI reports strong results for GPT-5.6 Sol on coding-agent evaluations. Anthropic positions its current Fable, Opus, and Sonnet models for long-running agents and coding. Those are useful signals, but vendor-reported benchmarks do not tell you how either product will behave inside your repository.

A coding tool is not only the model. It is the harness around the model: how it inspects files, runs commands, recovers from errors, manages context, shows changes, and fits your review process.

Run both on the same bounded ticket. Count the successful tests, review corrections, time to completion, and number of times you had to restate constraints. Pick the system that produces the safer merge, not the prettier first answer.

4. Memory, voice, and connectors: the gap has narrowed

Many comparisons still say Claude has no memory or voice. That is outdated. Claude now lists memory across conversations and offers two-way voice on web and mobile. ChatGPT also has memory, voice, apps, and connected sources.

The meaningful difference is implementation and availability. Features can vary by plan, country, rollout, and workplace admin controls. If your decision depends on Slack, Google Drive, Microsoft 365, Notion, or another system, test that exact connection with a non-sensitive document before committing.

5. Visual output: ChatGPT has the clear native advantage

ChatGPT can generate images directly. Claude explicitly says it does not generate photos or illustrations, although it can analyze uploaded images and build interactive charts, diagrams, and custom visuals using HTML and SVG.

If your finished deliverable regularly needs concepts, social visuals, or image variations, ChatGPT removes a handoff. If your “visual” is actually a data explanation, a small interactive tool, or a diagram tied to the conversation, Claude’s custom visuals may still be the more useful output.

6. Privacy: choose the plan and controls, not the logo

On consumer accounts, both companies provide controls over whether content may be used for model improvement. OpenAI lets signed-in users turn off “Improve the model for everyone” in Data Controls. Anthropic’s pricing page describes consumer model training as opt-out.

For business use, both vendors say workspace content is not used for model training by default. That is only the beginning of a procurement decision. Retention, connected-app permissions, regional processing, audit logs, identity management, and the sensitivity of the data all matter.

Do not paste confidential material into either consumer product simply because the answer above says “opt out.” Follow your organization’s policy and verify the settings on the actual account you use.

What does each one cost?

These are subscription prices, not API prices. Usage limits apply, taxes can differ, and plan details change. Check the official pricing pages before purchasing.

The test that is better than this article

Take one task you genuinely need to finish this week. Give both products the same source pack, constraints, and definition of done. Use the prompt below, then score the result on five things:

1. How much of the requested work was actually completed?
2. How many factual or technical corrections were required?
3. How well did it preserve constraints across the whole task?
4. How much manual cleanup remained before sharing?
5. How confidently could you verify the output?

Final decision

Buy ChatGPT Plus when you want one subscription that can handle the widest range of text, research, voice, visual, and agentic tasks.

Buy Claude Pro when your highest-value work is concentrated in documents, code, and sustained project context, and a focused workspace matters more than native image generation.

Use both only when the handoff between them produces enough paid or operational value to justify the extra cost. “I like both” is not a business case. Faster completion with fewer corrections can be.
